Today an official account of how much is moving through a contested waterway stands against independent trackers counting a fraction of it, and the markets took the larger account as relief on the same morning the cost of the war arrived in households as fuel, food, and the price of borrowing.
Keep your own measures whole, and set your household's decisions by what has been counted, not by what has been announced. The beam and the scales of true judgment belong to the LORD; every stone in the merchant's pouch is His making — Proverbs 16:11. The Hebrew for the merchant's weight is simply EH-ven (even), a stone, and the honest one is called sheh-lay-MAH (shelemah), whole — a stone nothing has been shaved off to make the seller's side come out right. That is the entire mechanism of the oldest commercial fraud in scripture: not a lie spoken aloud, but a lie built into the instrument, so that the theft reports itself as arithmetic and the thief never has to open his mouth. A power that needs a crisis to look contained is under no obligation to say anything false. It only has to publish the figure whose stone has been quietly shaved, and let the relief do its own work. Scripture files this under robbery rather than under bookkeeping: shrinking the measure, enlarging the price, bending the scales to lie — so the poor can be bought with silver and the destitute for the price of sandals — Amos 8:5-6. The prophet's target is not a market abstraction. It is men waiting impatiently for the day of worship to end so they can get back to the shaving.
A declaration of calm pronounced over an injury that is still open is the same offense wearing different clothes, and scripture names it in its own right. They dress the fracture in my people as though it were a trifle, announcing peace, peace — and there is no peace — Jeremiah 6:14. The word behind fracture is sheh-VER (shever), used of a shattered limb or a smashed jar, never of a bruise; and the phrase describing how the healers go about it, al-neh-kal-LAH (al-neqallah), means lightly, casually, the way a person handles a matter he has already decided is small. Yesterday's relief was bought at exactly that rate. The people who must actually route the ships and buy the fuel are planning on the smaller count, and that quiet disagreement is the reliable tell: when those who bear the consequence of being wrong decline to believe the official account, the official account is the thing being managed. The war's cost did not evaporate because a comfortable number was published. It landed where no announcement can follow it — in what a family pays to drive, to eat, to heat a house, to borrow against one.
What has been coated over is not thereby repaired, and weather is the auditor. One throws up a flimsy wall and the rest come along and coat it with whitewash. Say to those who smear it: it will fall. A drenching rain is coming, and hailstones, and a wind that tears — Ezekiel 13:10-11. The Hebrew is TAH-fel (taphel), a coating with nothing binding in it, from the same word family used for food served without salt: something applied that alters appearance and adds no strength whatever. This is the pattern running underneath the whole day — savers told their money is liquid and then told only a portion of it may leave; a company paid to confirm who people are losing the images that prove it; rules deciding whether a citizen's ballot counts still unsettled while the ballots are already in the mail. In each the surface was finished before the structure was. Nothing has been wrapped up that will not be unwrapped, and nothing hidden that will not be made known — Luke 12:2. The Greek is soong-keh-kah-LOOM-meh-non (synkekalymmenon), a perfect passive: something deliberately covered and left in that condition, which describes a standing state of affairs rather than an accident. So hold your own accounts to a standard you would be content to have opened without notice. Believe what has been counted over what has been proclaimed wherever you can examine both, and where you cannot examine either, provision for the smaller figure rather than the larger. And keep your attention on the households where the gap between the two accounts arrives as an actual cost, because that is precisely where the LORD has said His own interest sits.
